Question

Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatohu

Would like to  know if its permissible for a woman to swim while she has her haidh

Jazaakallaahu khairan

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is permissible for a woman in Haidh to swim. However, when the clothing/swimming outfit is wet, it sticks to the body and thus the form and shape of the body is exposed.[i] Therefore, a woman should ensure that there are no males around. This includes Mahram males as well (besides her husband) in keeping with shame and modesty.

See the following Ahadith on the importance of shame and modesty:

عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال «الإيمان بضع وستون شعبة، والحياء شعبة من الإيمان

Translation: Abu Hurairah (Radiyallāhu Anhu) narrates that Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: "Iman consists of more than sixty branches and Haya (modesty  bashfulness) is a part of Iman." (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 9)

عن أبي هريرة قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: الحياء من الإيمان، والإيمان في الجنة، والبذاء من الجفاء، والجفاء في النار

Translation: Abu Hurairah (Radiyallāhu Anhu) narrates that Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: "Modesty is from Iman, and (people of) Iman will be in Jannah. And obscenity is from rough/harsh character, and (people with) rough/harsh character will be in Jahannam" (Sunan Al-Tirmidhi: 2009)[ii]

قال ابن عمر: «إن الحياء والإيمان قرنا جميعا، فإذا رفع أحدهما رفع الآخر

Translation: Ibn 'Umar (Radiyallāhu Anhu) narrates that “Haya (modesty) and Iman are linked together, if any one of them is lifted, then the other will also be lifted” (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah: 25350)
