Title

What is the Sunnah procedure of replying to the Adhan?

Question

Assalamualaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakathu, Mufti Sahab. I would like to ask about the Azaan prayer. Is it enough to reply to the Azaan and say the Azaan prayer afterwards or should we make a proper supplication in which we say the Azaan prayer (praise Allah [Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala] and say Durood Shareef at beginning and end)?

JazakAllahu Khairan Katheeran Katheera.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The Sunnah procedure of replying to the Adhan is as follows. When the Adhan is being called, one should reply to every statement of the Adhan. When the Muazzin says الله الكبر الله اكبر, then reply الله الكبر الله اكبر.

When the Muazzin says اشهد ان لا اله الا الله, then reply اشهد ان لا اله الا الله.

However, when the Muazzin says حي علي الصلاة and حي علي الفلاح, then reply with لاحول ولا قوة الا بالله. When the Muazzin adds on الصلاة خير من النوم in the Fajr Adhan, reply with صدقتَ وبررتَ.

After the Adhan, recite the following dua:

Translation: Jabir Bin Abdullah narrated that Rasullah (Sallallahu Alaihi wasallallam) said the one who recites when he hears the Adhasn (O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and the prayer to be offered, grant Muhammad the privilege (of interceding) and also the eminence, and resurrect him to the praised position that you have promised), he will be granted my intercession on the day of restriction.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
