Question

Salam alaykum Is eyelash extensions permissible? The ones where they individually put each eyelash on to ur real individual eyelash with a tiny bit of glue and only comes off when ur eyelash naturally falls out ? I have very short eyelashes and my husband has said many times I have no eyelashes and I would like to have eyelashes for him . Also I would like to know if I’m allowed to have my eyebrows waxed? I am a revert and had my eyebrows waxed for years before I reverted and if i let them grow they are very ugly and uneven . I wear the niqab so nobody sees them

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

We are pleased to note that you have been guided to Islam. We make Duaa that Allah Ta’ala keep us all steadfast on Iman till our last breath. Ameen.

According to our understanding, the eyelash extensions you refer to are permanent eyelash extensions. It is not be permissible to wear such eyelash extensions since water will not reach one’s original eyelashes due to the glue and thus Wudhu will not be valid with these eyelashes on.

To lengthen your eyelashes, we advise you to rather use Surma (kuhl/antimony) in your eyes as encouraged in the Hadith of Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam):

عَلَيْكُمْ بِالْإِثْمِدِ فَإِنَّهُ يَجْلُو الْبَصَرَ وَيُنْبِتُ الشَّعْرَ

Translation: ‘You should use Ithmid (a type of Surmah), for it brightens (improves) the eyesight and makes the eyelashes grow.’” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1757)

 

You enquire if you can wax your eyebrows. If by waxing, you mean shaping and making your eyebrows thin/fine, then this is not correct. However, if one’s eyebrows are deformed or grow out of proportion, one may neaten them by removing only the stray ends until they look normal.[i] See the following Hadith:

 

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ لُعِنَتِ الْوَاصِلَةُ وَالْمُسْتَوْصِلَةُ وَالنَّامِصَةُ وَالْمُتَنَمِّصَةُ وَالْوَاشِمَةُ وَالْمُسْتَوْشِمَةُ مِنْ غَيْرِ دَاءٍ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ: وَتَفْسِيرُ …النَّامِصَةُ الَّتِي تَنْقُشُ الْحَاجِبَ حَتَّى تَرِقَّهُ وَالْمُتَنَمِّصَةُ الْمَعْمُولُ بِهَا

Translation: Ibn 'Abbas (Radiyallahu Anhu) narrates: Those women have been cursed who attach hair extensions for others and the one who asks for hair extensions, those women who pluck out hair for others and the woman who gets her hair plucked, the woman who puts tattoos for others and the one who has tattooing done without any medical need.

 

Imam Abu Dawood (Rahimahullah) explains: ...“Naamisah” means a woman who plucks out  hair from the eyebrow to make it thin. “Mutanammisah” means the woman who gets her eyebrows plucked.

النمص: نتف الشعر ومنه المنماص المنقاش اهـ ولعله محمول على ما إذا فعلته لتتزين للأجانب، وإلا فلو كان في وجهها شعر ينفر زوجها عنها بسببه، ففي تحريم إزالته بعد، لأن الزينة للنساء مطلوبة للتحسين، إلا أن يحمل على ما لا ضرورة إليه لما في نتفه بالمنماص من الإيذاء. وفي تبيين المحارم إزالة الشعر من الوجه حرام إلا إذا نبت للمرأة لحية أو شوارب فلا تحرم إزالته بل تستحب اهـ، وفي التتارخانية عن المضمرات: ولا بأس بأخذ الحاجبين وشعر وجهه ما لم يشبه المخنث اهـ ومثله في المجتبى تأمل

 وفي المحيط لا يحلق شعر حلقه ولا بأس بأن يأخذ شعر الحاجبين وشعر وجهه ما لم يتشبه بالمخنثين ومثله في الينابيع والمضمرات والمراد ما يكون مشوها لخبر لعن الله النامصة والمتنمصة
