Title

Will the disbelievers remain in Jahannam forever?

Question

Assalamu alaykum brother

 

I wanted to know if jahannam (Hell) was eternal for people who have wronged or whether it is eternal for disbelievers, non believers but temporary for believers who have sinned?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Jannah and Jahannam were created by Allah to reward the believers through His mercy and to punish the disbelievers, as well as the sinful believers. [1]

On the day of Qiyāmah every human from Ādam(‘alayhi salām) till the last person will be resurrected and will enter Jannah or Jahannam based on the decision of Allah . The day of Qiyāmah is also known as the day of Separation (Yawmul al-Faṣl)[2] i.e. the day wherein Allah separates the believers from the disbelievers and those who did good actions from those who sinned.

On the day of Qiyāmah mankind will be divided into two groups:

1.      The believers i.e. Those who believed in Allah and His messengers

2.      The disbelievers i.e. Those who rejected monotheism and the Deen of Allah.

The disbelievers will be driven to Jahannam, wherein they will remain for eternity. This is substantiated by many verses of the Qur’an:

{وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الْمُنَافِقِينَ وَالْمُنَافِقَاتِ وَالْكُفَّارَ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا هِيَ حَسْبُهُمْ وَلَعَنَهُمُ اللَّهُ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُقِيمٌ (68)} [التوبة: 68]

"Allah has promised the hypocrites; men and women, and the disbelievers, the Fire of Hell, therein shall they abide forever. It will suffice them. Allah has cursed them and for them is the lasting torment."

{إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَعَنَ الْكَافِرِينَ وَأَعَدَّ لَهُمْ سَعِيرًا (64) خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا أَبَدًا لَا يَجِدُونَ وَلِيًّا وَلَا نَصِيرًا } [الأحزاب: 64، 65]

Verily, Allah has cursed the disbelievers, and has prepared for them a flaming Fire.Wherein they will abide for ever. They will find (then) no protecting friend nor helper.

 

The believers will further consist of three groups:

1.      Those who will enter Jannah without any questioning or reckoning.

 

2.      Those who will enter Jannah after successfully passing the stage of reckoning.

 

3.      Those who will not pass the stage of reckoning. This group will be placed in Jahannam due to their sins. However, they will not remain in Jahannam for eternity. Rather, any person who has believed in Allah and His Rasul, will eventually be taken out of Jahannam and be placed into the eternal bliss of Jannah.

 

See the following hadith :

عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏"‏ إِذَا دَخَلَ أَهْلُ الْجَنَّةِ الْجَنَّةَ، وَأَهْلُ النَّارِ النَّارَ يَقُولُ اللَّهُ مَنْ كَانَ فِي قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالُ حَبَّةٍ مِنْ خَرْدَلٍ مِنْ إِيمَانٍ فَأَخْرِجُوهُ‏.‏ فَيُخْرَجُونَ قَدِ امْتُحِشُوا وَعَادُوا حُمَمًا، فَيُلْقَوْنَ فِي نَهَرِ الْحَيَاةِ، فَيَنْبُتُونَ كَمَا تَنْبُتُ الْحِبَّةُ فِي حَمِيلِ السَّيْلِ ـ أَوْ قَالَ ـ حَمِيَّةِ السَّيْلِ ‏"‏‏.‏ وَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ أَلَمْ تَرَوْا أَنَّهَا تَنْبُتُ صَفْرَاءَ مُلْتَوِيَةً ‏"‏‏.‏ [اخرجه البخاري ،كتاب الرقاق، باب صفة الجنة والنار]

Rasūlullah (ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam) has mentioned: "When the people of Jannah have entered Jannah, and the people of the Fire have entered the Fire, Allah will say. “Remove those who have faith equal to a mustard seed in their hearts.” They will come out, burnt like charcoal. Then they will be thrown into the river of Al-Hayyat (life) and they will recover just as a seed grows on the banks of a flood." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Don't you see that the germinating seed comes out yellow and twisted?"

" يَوْم الْفَصْل " هُوَ يَوْم الْقِيَامَة ; وَسُمِّيَ بِذَلِكَ لِأَنَّ اللَّه تَعَالَى يَفْصِل فِيهِ بَيْن خَلْقه دَلِيله قَوْله تَعَالَى " لَنْ تَنْفَعكُمْ أَرْحَامكُمْ وَلَا أَوْلَادكُمْ يَوْم الْقِيَامَة يَفْصِل بَيْنكُمْ " [ الْمُمْتَحِنَة : 3 ] .

وَنَظِيره قَوْله تَعَالَى : " وَيَوْم تَقُوم السَّاعَة يَوْمئِذٍ يَتَفَرَّقُونَ " [ الرُّوم : 14 ] .

ف " يَوْم الْفَصْل " مِيقَات الْكُلّ ; كَمَا قَالَ تَعَالَى : " إِنَّ يَوْم الْفَصْل كَانَ مِيقَاتًا " [ النَّبَأ : 17 ] أَيْ الْوَقْت الْمَجْعُول لِتَمْيِيزِ الْمُسِيء مِنْ الْمُحْسِن , وَالْفَصْل بَيْنهمَا : فَرِيق فِي الْجَنَّة وَفَرِيق فِي السَّعِير
