Title

How many people are needed for Jumu’ah Salaah to be valid?

Question

In an Islamic book, i have found that jumma prayer can be prayed in jamaat, if only 2 persons are available.Again in another website,i saw that at least 3 persons are needed.Now what is the correct view about it?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

We commend you on your zeal for knowledge. However, the knowledge of Deen is very sacred and must be sought from authentic sources. The information found on google and the internet are not always authentic. Taking knowledge of Deen from random places can confuse a person, rather than guide him. Muhammed Bin Sireen (Rahmatullahi Alaih) has advised:

(إن هذا العلم دين فانظروا عن من تأخذوا دينكم (مقدمه صحيح مسلم

Translation: “Certainly this knowledge is Deen, so be wary from who you take your Deen from.”

The preferred view according to the Hanafi Madhab is that there must be a minimum of four adult males for the Jumu’ah Salaah to be valid i.e. the Imam and three followers. The Jumu’ah Salaah must also be preceded by a Khutbah. If these conditions are not found, the Jumu’ah Salaah will not be valid.[i]

(هِيَ فَرْضُ) عَيْنٍ (يَكْفُرُ جَاحِدُهَا) لِثُبُوتِهَا بِالدَّلِيلِ الْقَطْعِيِّ كَمَا حَقَّقَهُ الْكَمَالُ وَهِيَ فَرْضٌ مُسْتَقِلٌّ آكَدُ مِنْ الظُّهْرِ...(وَ) الرَّابِعُ: (الْخُطْبَةُ فِيهِ) فَلَوْ خَطَبَ قَبْلَهُ وَصَلَّى فِيهِ لَمْ تَصِحَّ. "ويشترط لصحتها" أي صلاة الجمعة "ستة أشياء" … "و" السادس "الجماعة" لأن الجمعة مشتقة منها ولأن العلماء أجمعوا على أنها لا تصح من المنفرد "و" واختلفوا في تقدير الجماعة فعندنا "هم ثلاثة رجال" وإن لم يحضروا الخطبة  … "غير الإمام" عند الإمام الأعظم ومحمد وقال أبو يوسف اثنان سوى الإمام لما في المثنى من معنى الاجتماع ولهما إن الجمع الصحيح إنما هو الثلاثة "

الجواب وباللّٰہ التوفیق: جمعہ کے قیام کے لئے کم از کم امام کے علاوہ تین مقتدیوں کا ہونا ضروری ہے جو خطبہ وجماعت میں شامل رہیں۔
