Can women wear bright colours? Can a woman travel without a Mahram?

1. When a woman covers herself when leaving her home is it forbidden for her to cover herself with colours which are bright if it is forbidden then which colours will be regarded as bright.

2. Due to widespread sinning nowadays will it be prohibited for a woman to travel any distance without a mahram.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

1)    When a woman leaves her home, she should conceal herself in such a way that she does not attract the attraction of man towards her. That is by concealing her form and shape. It is natural for a man to be attracted to the form, shape and colour of women.

Furthermore, men are also attracted to a woman wearing colourful, fancy attire. A woman should guard herself from that as well. A dark colour, such as black or blue that does not attract an exciting gaze towards women should be considered.

You may use the above principle to determine which colours are attractive. [i]

2)    If there is a genuine need for a woman to leave her house and travel lesser than the distance of Safar being 78 km or less, she may go out by herself if she is certain that she will not fall in Fitnah. For example, someone attacking her chastity and respect etc. If there is any feeling that a woman’s respect and dignity will be attacked, then it will not be permissible for her to travel without a Mahram even within 78 kms. [ii]

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best.
