Zakat on loan

I have to pay laon total amount of 14000 Australain dollars to bank . it was used through credit cards

do i need to pay zakat if i am owing laon to bank

zakatable amount is less than loan amount

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, Zakat is compulsory upon a person who possesses the amount of Nisaab for a whole year, over and above ones basic needs and after fulfilling his debts. The Nisaab of Zakat is 612.35g of silver or its equivalent in Australian dollars.[1]

In the enquired scenario, you refer to owing the bank 14000 Australian dollars. If after deducting the loan amount from your total Zakatable assets equate to Nisaab, then Zakat is compulsory.[2] Therefore, if your loan amount exceeds your total Zakatable assets, then Zakat is not compulsory.
