Is it permissible for one to smoke CBD for insomnia, anxiety & depression?

Salam, the question I want to ask is, is it permissible for one to smoke CBD, I understand that smoking marijuana is forbidden because of the intexicatint THC, but CBD has 0.2% THC something that has a 0 effect on the body. I’m currently trying to use CBD for my anxiety/depression/insomnia I’m not a big fan of prescription medication since it makes me feel foggy

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a chemical compound from the cannabis plant. It is a naturally occurring substance that is used in products like oils and edibles to impart a feeling of relaxation and calmness. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it is not psychoactive.[i] While CBD is a component of marijuana (one of hundreds), it does not cause a “high.”[ii]  CBD is the non-psychoactive portion of the plant, so what that means is it will not have any effects like euphoria. [iii]

It is suggested that the use of CBD has some medicinal properties, including relieving inflammation, pain relief and reducing anxiety, although there have not been conclusive scientific studies on this.[iv]

In principle, the prohibition of marijuana in Shariah is due to it being an intoxicant.[v] Nabi Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam mentions in a hadith:

Translation: “All intoxicants are prohibited.” (Bukhari: 4343)

However, as referenced above, CBD is not the same at THC in terms of being psychoactive. Therefore, if one uses CBD products for medicinal use and it does not lead to intoxication, then it will be permissible as long as the laws and regulations of your country permit the use of CBD related products. However, it is not permissible to smoke CBD.

Nevertheless, we strongly advise you to seek the consultation of a medical expert with regards to your condition and the use of CBD before using such products.
