Title

What is the duration of the Makrooh times for Salaah?

Question

Assalamualaykum

When i was in South Africa, i remember the makrooh time after sunrise and at istiwaa being only 3-4. here in England, the general makrooh times are 15 mins. Are there different Aqwaal in the Madhab?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, it is not permissible to perform any Salaah at sunrise, sunset and Istiwaa (when the sun is directly in the centre).[i]

Sunrise is when the complete sun rises above the horizon.[ii]

The complete duration of sunrise is approximately 5-10 mins.[iii] However, it must be noted the duration of sunrise continues to change throughout the year depending on one’s latitude and time.

Therefore, as a matter of precaution the Makrooh time is extended to 15/20 mins. [iv]

Istiwaa is when the sun is at its highest peak at noon. In reality, this is a very momentary period and cannot be accurately ascertained. As a matter of precaution, the jurists have prohibited one to pray approximately 5 mins before Istiwaa and 5 mins after Istiwaa. [v]

According to our knowledge the average Makrooh time provided is approximately 10 mins here in South Africa.
