Having difficulty making Sajdah, is one allowed to sit & make Sajdah?

Assalaamu `alaykum.

I wish to ask a question on behalf of my wife. She is struggling with the sajdah part of salah as a result of an injury to her knee and I was hoping you could claify the ruling regarding sitting and praying. She is in pain when she bends her knee and she has tried to pray in the required manner but then struggles to get up.

Is she required to pray the salah standing and sit down on a chair for the sajdah portion or does she have to pray the whole salah sitting until she is better? Or is there a different method she has to follow?

Please can you help provide an answer for this.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, when one is unable to perform sajdah in alāh but is able to stand then the following rules apply:

1)    Qiyām (standing posture) is not obligatory on him.

2)     He will perform the rukūʿ (bowing down) and sajdah (prostration) by gesture in such a way that the gesture for sajdah is lower than the gesture for rukūʿ.

If one does not make his gesture for sajdah lower than the gesture for rukūʿ, the alāh will not be valid. However, if one is unable to make the sajdah lower than the rukūʿ, his alāh will be valid.

Accordingly, your mother has the following options when performing her alāh:

1)    She may perform the entire alāh, including the gestures for rukūʿ and sajdah standing up.

2)    She may perform the qiyām and rukūʿ standing up and then sit down to perform the gesture for sajdah.

3)    She may perform the entire alāh (including the gestures for rukūʿ and sajdah) sitting down.

It is best to sit down and perform the entire alāh.[1]
