Title: Displeased with the decree of Allah Taa’la, will it be kufr?

Question

I have been watching a video on the Seerah of Nabi Muhammad Peace be Apon him. The lecturer Yasir Qadhi said that complaining to Allah can be Kufr. If a person asks "Why". As in if a person says " Oh Allah, Why did this happen to me"
Can you please explain this. https://youtu.be/twp3NlOp-kA?t=26m47s

Does that mean whenever a person is going through trials, for example is sick and says "Oh Allah why is this happening to me" he becomes a disbeliever?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Dear Brother,

There is a difference between complaining to Allah Taa’la and objecting to Allah Taa’la. It is permissible to complain to Allah Taa’la. Consider the following from the Quran:

Translation: He (Ya’qub Alihis Salam) said, “I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah”. Surah Yusuf 86

Translation: “And [mention] Ayyub, when he called to his Lord, "Indeed, adversity has touched me, and you are the Most Merciful of the merciful”. Surah Al-Anbiyaa 83

However, objecting to Allah Taa’la is Kufr (disbelief). Allah Taa’la says:

Translation: He is not questioned about what He does, but they will be questioned”. Surah Al-Ambiyaa 23

To bring Iman on taqdeer and submit to taqdeer is compulsory. It is reported in a lengthy Hadith:

Translation: “If you had the equivalent of Mount Uhud which you spent in the cause of Allah, that would not be accepted from you until you believed in the divine decree and you know that whatever has befallen you, could not have passed you; and whatever has passed you, could not have befallen you….”. Sunan Ibn Majah 1/55

When Allah Taa’la decrees anything, we should submit to the will of Allah Taa’la and not object to Allah. However, if one faces adversities with the decree of Allah Taa’la there is nothing wrong in expressing one’s pain to Allah Taa’la and asking Allah for relief. This is not Kufr. It is human nature to do so.
