Title: Maya nail polish

Question

Respected mufti saheb asalamu alaikum

My question refers qusetion #40148, 08 march 2018 regarding permissibility of using Maya nail polish and making wudhu for salaat.

Please can mufti saheb explain and elaborate on the permeability of the nail polish if mufti saheb has conducted tests himself.

Shukran

Answer

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

We are unable to comment on the permeability of the nail polish in reference as we did not conduct a test on the product.

The water in wudhu reaching the nails is a prerequisite for the validity of wudhu. Exercise precaution in using Maya nail polish if one is unsure of the permeability of water to the nails[2].

[1] Title: Maya Cosmetics

Question

I work with Maya Cosmetics in the USA. We manufacture and distribute halal nailpolish all around the world. We would love to be reviewed by your committee as it would bring strength to our brand and to truly show an alternative for woman around the world who would love to paint their nails without the guilt! We are already ceritified by IFANCA and Darul Qassim! But having you certify us as well will be a major benefactor!

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

We have seen the certifications on the Maya Cosmetics website. Many companies have introduced “breathable” or “water based” nail-polish. Their claim is that the enamel in these nail-polish allows water-vapours to pass through. In order for us to determine the water permeability of the nail polish we require testers. Thereafter we will conduct tests and use expert biochemists to assist us in issuing a ruling.
