Title: Suffering from chronic urinary tract infection, won’t be able to fast.

Question

Assalam brothers, I have been suffering from chronic uti( urinary tact infection) since my teen age hence was unable to fast. When I got marrried, this problem somehow improved, I used to make dua and was so envious of people who could fast in Ramadan. Anyway, I did feel the effects of not having water but the symptoms improved once the fast was completed. I managed by drinking lots of water. However, last year I had a bad infection and couldn't fast during Ramadan, I made an intention of completing. these fasts during winter months. Last month I started fasting, and triedvto tolerate the affects of lack of water, however I again ended up with an infection and had to discontinue. It's going to be Ramadan in a few months, my husband says I have exemption from fasting and should give kaffarah. My heart just breaks at the thought of missing these fasts in our holy month of Ramadan. What should I do? The infection hasn't cleared up despite antibiotics, and I have to maintain my water intake. Please advise...and please make dua that this problem doesnt hinder my fasting. What shall I do for ladt year missed fasts, and for the coming es as well. Please make dua for my health. At times I feel have I earned Allah's displeasure, that I missed out on such an important blesssing.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

We make dua’a to Allah Ta’ala that He grant you complete cure. Aameen.

Your concern regarding fasting is an expression of your Imaan and Allah consciousness.

It is through the wisdom of Allah Ta’ala that we are created weak and afflicted with sickness.  Allah Ta’ala wants us to realize and understand our helplessness and our dependency on Him.  When our sight is directed towards the greatness of Almighty Allah and towards our own weakness, we attain the Ma’rifah and recognition of Almighty Allah, which is a necessary ingredient for true success.  Hence, our illnesses are signs that Allah Ta’ala intends good for us. [i][ii]

You mention that you have intentions & concern to fast this upcoming Ramadan as well as previous missed fasts of Ramadan, Allah Ta’ala rewards and judges a person by his intentions. It is mention in the ahaadith that all actions & rewards are judge by intentions & Allah Ta’ala only looks at our hearts and intentions.[iii] [iv]

The condition of your health is a test from Allah Ta’ala. As believers, we believe in taqdir and destiny. We believe that all good and bad is from Allah. It is wajib (obligatory) to be happy with taqdir as that is the will of Allah Ta’ala. There is some good hidden in this situation which we cannot comprehend. Submit to the will of Allah and make dua’a to Allah Ta’ala abundantly for cure. It is stated in the ahaadith that Allah Ta’ala forgives a Muslim in lieu of every calamity that afflicts him.
See the following hadith,

 {صحيح البخاري}

Translation:  Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam has said: “Allah Ta’ala forgives a Muslim in lieu of every calamity that afflicts him even though he is pricked by a thorn.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhari)[v] [vi]

In principle, if a woman experiences such an illness that she is unable to fast, then she will be excused from fasting. A sick person is excused and receives all the benefits of the worship of a healthy person. This is by the pure grace of Allah Ta’ala.
If she recovers from her illness, then she has to make up (Qadhaa of) this missed fasts. If the sickness is permanent and there is no hope of recovery, then she must offer fidyah (monetary compensation) for every missed fast. [vii] [viii]

However, if her condition improves in the future by the will of Allah Ta’ala to the point where she is able to fast, then she will have to make up all those fasts by fasting even if their fidyah was paid.

The fidyah of each fast is half a Saa’ (1.75kg to 2.32 kg / 3.86 lb to 5.11 lb) of wheat (or its monetary equivalent) which is equivalent to the amount of Sadaqatul Fitr in your country.[ix]

We also advise you to consult with your medical practitioner.
