Title: Secret Nikah

Question

Assalamualikum, I am in love with a boy. Both of our family knows about it and they do not have any objections. We planned to marry after a year due to some circumstances. But it is really difficult to control our sexual needs and Allah forbidden fornication. So, we decided to marry secretly, will it be valid?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

A secret nikah goes against the spirit of Shariah. Furthermore, there are many what ifs in a secret marriage.

  • Ø What if there is a dispute and that leads to divorce?
  • Ø What if you conceive?
  • Ø What if you are seen in public with your husband and your nikah is unknown?
  • Ø What if…….?
  • Ø What if…….?

You should try to explain the situation to your parents. You should be transparent and open about your situation, and express your concern of falling into a greater sin. It is also advisable to speak to an influential member of the family to convince your family to have the Nikah done as soon as possible. You may have the rukhsati (living with the husband) later.

We make dua that Allah Ta’āla grant you a blissful married life. Ameen

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
