Title: Hanafi praying Asr behind Imam

Question

Salam,

Here people of different schools of thought live and pray together at a university and often pray in Jamaat. However, when we (Hanafi) go to pray dhuhr when Asr time has already started for others, can we join them in their jamaat when the imam is praying asr and we are praying dhuhr? Also, is it ok we a hanafi imam start dhuhr jamaat while there are people who are joining for asr?

JazakAllah

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is not permissible for Hanafis to perform Zuhr Salah behind an Imam who is performing Asr Salah.

If a Hanafi is performing Zuhr Salah and adherents of other Madhabs join with the intention of Asr Salah, that is permissible in their Madhab.[1]

That does not affect the Zuhr Salah of the Hanafis.
