Can the evil eye affect pictures of oneself?


In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh. 

The harms of the evil eye can materialize even if the actual body has never been sighted. Pictures also attract the evil eye. One should avoid displaying one’s pictures and guard himself by reciting the duas for protection every day. You should keep in mind that taking pictures of ensouled objects without a legitimate need is prohibited.[1]

وَمِنْهَا: مَا تُؤَثِّرُ فِي الْإِنْسَانِ كَيْفِيَّتُهَا بِمُجَرَّدِ الرُّؤْيَةِ مِنْ غَيْرِ اتِّصَالٍ بِهِ، لِشِدَّةِ خُبْثِ تِلْكَ النَّفْسِ، وَكَيْفِيَّتِهَا الْخَبِيثَةِ الْمُؤَثِّرَةِ، وَالتَّأْثِيرُ غَيْرُ مَوْقُوفٍ عَلَى الِاتِّصَالَاتِ الْجِسْمِيَّةِ، كَمَا يَظُنُّهُ مَنْ قَلَّ عِلْمُهُ وَمَعْرِفَتُهُ بِالطَّبِيعَةِ وَالشَّرِيعَةِ، بَلِ التَّأْثِيرُ يَكُونُ تَارَةً بِالِاتِّصَالِ، وَتَارَةً بِالْمُقَابَلَةِ، وَتَارَةً بِالرُّؤْيَةِ، وَتَارَةً بِتَوَجُّهِ الرُّوحِ نَحْوَ مَنْ يُؤَثِّرُ فِيهِ، وَتَارَةً بِالْأَدْعِيَةِ، وَالرُّقَى، وَالتَّعَوُّذَاتِ، وَتَارَةً بِالْوَهْمِ وَالتَّخَيُّلِ، وَنَفْسُ الْعَائِنِ لَا يَتَوَقَّفُ تَأْثِيرُهَا عَلَى الرُّؤْيَةِ، بَلْ قَدْ يَكُونُ أَعْمَى، فَيُوصَفُ لَهُ الشَّيْءُ فَتُؤَثِّرُ نَفْسُهُ فِيهِ، وَإِنْ لَمْ يَرَهُ، وَكَثِيرٌ مِنَ الْعَائِنِينَ يُؤَثِّرُ فِي الْمَعِينِ بِالْوَصْفِ مِنْ غَيْرِ رُؤْيَةٍ


فتح الباري لابن حجر (10/ 201)

وَإِنَّمَا التَّأْثِيرُ لِلرُّوحِ وَالْأَرْوَاحُ مُخْتَلِفَةٌ فِي طَبَائِعِهَا وَقُوَاهَا وَكَيْفِيَّاتِهَا وَخَوَاصِّهَا فَمِنْهَا مَا يُؤَثِّرُ فِي الْبَدَنِ بِمُجَرَّدِ الرُّؤْيَةِ مِنْ غَيْرِ اتِّصَالٍ بِهِ لِشِدَّةِ خُبْثِ تِلْكَ الرُّوحِ وَكَيْفِيَّتِهَا الْخَبِيثَةِ وَالْحَاصِلُ أَنَّ التَّأْثِيرَ بِإِرَادَةِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى وَخَلْقِهِ لَيْسَ مَقْصُورًا عَلَى الِاتِّصَالِ الْجُسْمَانِيِّ بَلْ يَكُونُ تَارَةً بِهِ وَتَارَةً بِالْمُقَابَلَةِ وَأُخْرَى بِمُجْرِدِ الرُّؤْيَةِ وَأُخْرَى بِتَوَجُّهِ الرُّوحِ كَالَّذِي يَحْدُثُ مِنَ الْأَدْعِيَةِ وَالرُّقَى وَالِالْتِجَاءِ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَتَارَةً يَقَعُ ذَلِكَ بِالتَّوَهُّمِ وَالتَّخَيُّلِ فَالَّذِي يَخْرُجُ مِنْ عَيْنِ الْعَائِنِ سَهْمٌ مَعْنَوِيٌّ إِنْ صَادَفَ الْبَدَنَ لَا وِقَايَةَ لَهُ أَثَّرَ فِيهِ وَإِلَّا لَمْ يَنْفُذِ السَّهْمُ بَلْ رُبَّمَا رُدَّ عَلَى صَاحِبِهِ كَالسَّهْمِ الْحِسِّيِّ سَوَاءً
