Title: Performing Asar in Shaafi time

Question

Assalamu alaykum warahmatullahi wabarakatuhu, If a Hanafi prays Asr salah during Shaafi time accidentally, thinking it's time for Asr. Later on they find out they prayed during the Shaafi time will they have to repeat their Asr Salah? And this person is not traveling nor did they pray in jamaat. Jazakumullahu Khairan!

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

One should exercise precaution in performing every Salaah in its appropriate time.

There are two competing views in the Hanafi madhab regarding the ending time for Zohar salaah and the commencing time for Asar salaah.

One of the views concur with the Shaafi view.

In the enquired situation and in view of Shaafi time also being a reliable Hanafi view, the Asar salaah performed in the Shaafi time will be valid. [i]

قلت: أرأيت وقت الظهر متى هو؟ قال: من  حين تزول الشمس إلى أن يكون الظل قامة في قول أبي يوسف ومحمد. وقال أبو حنيفة: لا يدخل وقت العصر حتى يصير الظل قامتين، فإذا صار الظل قامتين  دخل وقت العصر.

وهذه رواية أبي يوسف عن أبي حنيفة.

قال: (وروى الحسن بن زياد عن أبي حنيفة: أن الظل إذا صار مثله: فقد خرج وقتها)

قال (ووقت الظهر من حين تزول الشمس إلى أن يكون ظل كل شيء مثله) في قول أبي يوسف ومحمد رحمهما الله تعالى وقال أبو حنيفة - رحمه الله تعالى - لا يدخل وقت العصر حتى يصير الظل قامتين ولا خلاف في أول وقت الظهر
