Title: Renaming Child

Question

Assalamualikum Mufti Sab,

I choose my daughter's name as "Aafiyah Sumaiyyah" and called out this name when I gave azaan and iqamat in her ears. There is need felt in the family that my daughter's name should have a part of my name also included. My name is Saleem Ahmed. I have two questions to ask as follows-

1.  Is it permissible to change the name which was kept after the azaan and iqamat?

2. Is is permissible to attach Father's name to daughter like in my case Aafiyah Saleem or Aafiyah Ahmed etc..

Could you kinldy clarify.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

May Allah shower His blessings on your child. Ameen

  1. It is permissible to rename your child even after azaan and iqaamat.  [1] [2] [3] [4]
  2. You can add your name to your daughter’s name. She may be named Sumayyah Ahmed or Aafiyah Ahmed. [5]
