Title: What is considered to be israaf?


Asalamu Alaikum, I would like to ask a question regarding israaf. Is it considered israaf to buy a new phone once in a while and sell your old one? I am asking this if a kid were to save up so he can't exactly financially afford it without saving up for a while.


In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Whilst Islam allows us to spend our wealth in permissible venues, it also advises us to spend in moderation. 

Allah Ta’ala mentions in the Holy Qur’aan,

{إِنَّ الْمُبَذِّرِينَ كَانُوا إِخْوَانَ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَكَانَ الشَّيْطَانُ لِرَبِّهِ كَفُورًا} [الإسراء: 27]

Surely, squanderers (the extravagant) are brothers of satans, and the Satan is very ungrateful to his Lord.

Expounding on the issue of extravagance, Mufti Shafi’ Saheb beautifully writes:

“The truth of the matter is that the course of moderation is very desirable in wearing what one wears and living where one lives, in almost everything. Sayyidna 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas, radiyallahu anhu, said: Eat and drink what you wish and wear what you like. But, take care of two things: One, that there be no Israf (excess from the measure of need) in it. Two, that there be no pride and arrogance about it.1

It is permissible to sell of one’s old phone and purchase a new one provided one’s intention is not to merely to display one's class in front of others.2

قَوْله تَعَالَى وَلا تُبَذِّرْ تَبْذِيراً رُوِيَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ وَابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ وَقَتَادَةَ قَالُوا التَّبْذِيرُ إنْفَاقُ الْمَالِ فِي غَيْرِ حَقِّهِ

(وَلا تُبَذِّرْ) أَيْ لَا تُسْرِفُ فِي الْإِنْفَاقِ فِي غَيْرِ حَقٍّ. قَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ: وَالتَّبْذِيرُ إِنْفَاقُ الْمَالِ فِي غَيْرِ حَقِّهِ، وَلَا تَبْذِيرَ فِي عَمَلِ الْخَيْرِ. وَهَذَا قَوْلُ الْجُمْهُورِ. وَقَالَ أَشْهَبُ عَنْ مَالِكٍ: التَّبْذِيرُ هُوَ أَخْذُ الْمَالِ مِنْ حَقِّهِ وَوَضْعِهِ فِي غَيْرِ حَقِّهِ، وَهُوَ الْإِسْرَافُ، وَهُوَ حَرَامٌ لِقَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى:" إِنَّ الْمُبَذِّرِينَ كانُوا إِخْوانَ الشَّياطِينِ" وقوله " إِخْوانَ" يَعْنِي أَنَّهُمْ فِي حُكْمِهِمْ، إِذِ الْمُبَذِّرُ سَاعٍ فِي إِفْسَادٍ كَالشَّيَاطِينِ، أَوْ أَنَّهُمْ يَفْعَلُونَ مَا تُسَوِّلُ لَهُمْ أَنْفُسُهُمْ، أَوْ أَنَّهُمْ يُقْرَنُونَ بِهِمْ غَدًا فِي النَّارِ، ثَلَاثَةُ أَقْوَالٍ. وَالْإِخْوَانُ هُنَا جَمْعُ أَخٍ مِنْ غَيْرِ النَّسَبِ،

(وَلا تُبَذِّرْ تَبْذِيرًا) يقول: ولا تفرّق يا محمد ما أعطاك الله من مال في معصيته تفريقا. وأصل التبذير: التفريق في السّرَف... (وَلا تُبَذّرْ تَبْذيرًا) قال: التبذير في غير الحقّ، وهو الإسراف... حدثنا محمد بن المثنى، قال: ثنا محمد بن جعفر، قال: ثنا شعبة، عن الحكم، قال: سمعت يحيى بن الجزار يحدّث عن أبي العُبيدين (1) ضرير البصر، أنه سأل عبد الله بن مسعود عن هذه الآية (ولا تُبَذِّرْ تَبْذِيرًا) قال: إنفاق المال في غير حقه... قال ابن جريج وقال مجاهد: لو أنفق إنسان ماله كله في الحقّ ما كان تبذيرا، ولو انفق مدّا في باطل كان تبذيرا.
