Title: Family belittling their child

Question

Salaam, I had a question about parents/familly members/relatives/freinds. Let's say a kid wants to do something in his life, he is trying to become successful in the worldly life. The thing is that his parents and relatives redicule him. Success in itself is so hard that dealing with those type of people who belittle you make success nearly impossible. Is it permisible for that kid to not listen to his family and do what he wants to ?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Almighty Allah has put natural love in the hearts of parents for their children. Their attitude and conduct towards their children is motivated by love and concern. Parents have the experiences of life. They are mature and understand what is the best for the child. On the other hand, a child is young. He does not have the mental maturity and experiences like the parents have. Children should trust in their parent’s love for them. When a child adopts that attitude toward the parents, he would not feel belittled with the sincere guidance of his parents.

It is also normal for children to be sensitive and get affected quickly. Adjust the sharpness of the sensitivity with sabr and patience. That will create internal strength to overlook and understand many things better. Do not jump to conclusion.

If you experience more difficulty after implementing our advises, then you may discuss your feelings with a senior family member and seek his wise counsel. Also turn to Allah Taala with Salah, dua and Zikr.

And Allah Taala Knows Best
