Title: Giving zakaah to mother-in-law


Slm . would like to know if it would be correct to give my zakaat to my mother inlaw. She is a pensioner her only source of income is the grant she recives as a pensioner. She lives with father in law his only source of income is the pension grant he receives. They live in a pension home and the rental is covered through one of their grants. They have no cell phones televisions etc.


In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

If the grant received by your mother-in-law is used by her and not saved and she has no other source of income or jewelry equivalent to the nisaab which is R4084.90[1], then she qualifies as a legitimate recipient of zakaah[2].

It will be more rewarding to give your mother-in-law your zakaah as that is an expression of maintaining family ties for which you will receive double reward.

وقيد بالولاد لجوازه لبقية الأقارب كالإخوة والأعمام والأخوال الفقراء بل هم أولى؛ لأنه صلة وصدقة.

وفي الظهيرية: ويبدأ في الصدقات بالأقارب، ثم الموالي ثم الجيران، ولو دفع زكاته إلى من نفقته واجبة عليه من الأقارب جاز إذا لم يحسبها من النفقة بحر وقدمناه موضحا أول الزكاة.

ويجوز دفعها لزوجة أبيه وابنه وزوج ابنته تتارخانية.
