Title: 70 excuses for Muslim

Question

Assalamualaikum,

Are there any virtues for visiting the grave of Hazrat Hussain Radiallahuanhu?

I have heard that Ali radiallahuanhu did not wish to disclose the location of his grave before he passed away. Do we then agree that the location of his grave is at the Imam Ali Mosque in Najaf, Iraq?

Jazakallah

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The quote in reference is not a Hadith. Hereunder are the quotes from our pious predecessors;

Translation: Ja’far ibn Muhammad states, “When you hear something about your (Muslim) brother which you dislike, search for a justification until you find seventy justifications (for that action). If one of the explanations fit the scenario (consider that the reason). If (even after searching for an explanation) you do not find an excuse, say (to yourself) perhaps there is a reason which I could not find.” (Shu’ab Al-Iman V.10 Page 559)

Translation: Hamdun Al-Qassar states, “If a friend errs, make seventy excuses for them. If your hearts are unable to do this, then know that the shortcoming is in your own selves since seventy excuses were presented but weren’t accepted.” (Shu’ab Al-Iman V.13 Page 504)
