Title: Visiting a woman who had miscarriage and bad omen

Question

Assaaam-o-alaikum

I have a question regarding miscarriage.

If a woman has a miscarriage, are unmarried young girls and married woman who are still capable of having more children’s allowed to visit that person who had a miscarriage.

A lot of “old ladies” don’t allow them to visit that particular woman due to bad omen. Otherwise they will get “affected” by the woman who had a miscarriage.

Please do answer asap.

Thank you in advance.

Assaaam-o-alaikum

Answer

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

As Muslims, we are sensitive to our beliefs. We believe that all good and bad come from Allaah Ta’aala. There is no such thing as bad omen in Islaam. Hence, it is necessary to renounce all forms of superstition.

It is Allaah Ta’aala who grants couples children and it is He who deprives them of children. Visiting a woman who had a miscarriage does not have any negative consequences. Consider the following verse:

يَهَبُ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ إِنَاثًا وَيَهَبُ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ الذُّكُورَ (49) أَوْ يُزَوِّجُهُمْ ذُكْرَانًا وَإِنَاثًا وَيَجْعَلُ مَنْ يَشَاءُ عَقِيمًا إِنَّهُ عَلِيمٌ قَدِيرٌ

Translation: He grants to whomever He so wills female offspring and He grants to whomever He so wills male offspring. Or He bestows (upon some) both males and females. And He makes barren whomever He so wills. Indeed, He is All-Knowing, All-mighty. (Ash-Shooraa v.49-50)

If a woman miscarried, that is by the will of Allaah Ta’aala. A miscarriage does not affect other people negatively. It is incorrect for the old ladies to prevent others from visiting a woman who had a miscarriage, irrespective of whether they are capable of bearing children or not[1].

And Allaah Ta’aala Knows Best.
