Zakaah on residential plot

Aaslam o Alaikum ,,

A friend has a house which he has rented. he is paying zakat on the rent as per zakat regulations..  He has also bought a residential plot for the purpose of making house in future and living in it , no intention of selling it as of know, does he have to pay zakat on it also.

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

Brother in Islaam,

You refer to two issues:

  1. Zakaah on the rent earned from a house rental:

Your friend’s understanding is correct. He will add the income from the rental to his wealth when calculating for annual zakaah.

  1. Zakaah on land purchased for personal use:

In principle, there is no zakaah on land purchased for personal use or personal development[1].  Accordingly, he will not pay any zakaah for the residential plot. However, if he sells the plot in the future, zakaah will be on the proceeds of the sale according to his personal financial situation.

And Allaah Ta’aala Knows Best.
