Title

Hadith of ‘Ashura’ Fast

Question

Please provide the reference of Hadith regarding fasting on 9th and 10th of Moharram ul Haraam.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

It is sunnah to fast on the day of ‘Ashura’ (the tenth of Muharram).

Consider the following hadith:

‘A’isha (radiallahu ‘anha) narrated that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) used to command (others) to fast (the day of ‘Ashura’) before fasting during the month of Ramadan was made obligatory. When the fast of Ramadan was made obligatory, whoever wished to fast the day of ‘Ashura’ did so, and whoever wished to leave it did so. (Muslim, 1125)[1]

When fasting the day of ‘Ashura’, it is also advisable to fast one day before or one day after it to avoid imitating the Jews.

Consider the following hadith:

Ibn ‘Abbas (radiallahu ‘anhu) narrated that when Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) fasted on the day of ‘Ashura’ and commanded that the fast of that day should be observed, they (the Sahaba) said to him, “O Rasulullah, it is a day which the Jews and Christians hold in high esteem.”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied, “When the next year comes, in sha Allah, we will fast on the ninth day.”

He (Ibn ‘Abbas) (radiallahu ‘anhu) continued, “But Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) passed away before the next year arrived.” (Muslim, 1134)[2]
