I pray in a masjid where the majority of the imams is of Shafiee madhab, and there is rarely a imam of Hanafi madhab to pray salaatul Taraweeh. I wanted to ask if the Shafi'ee Imam leads salaat is it necessary for him to make intention for the women like in Hanafi madhab? Or is it unneccessary for them and anyone can join the salaat?
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
In principle, all the conditions of Salaah that are applicable to a Hanafi Imam are also applicable on a non-Hanafi Imam, eg. Shafi’ee Imam in order for the salaah of the Hanafi Muqtadee’s to be valid.
Therefore, it is necessary that the Shafi’ee Imam makes intention for the female Muqtadee’s in order for their Salaah to be valid.
With regards to women performing Taraweeh salaah in the Musjid, it is advisable for women to perform Salaah at home as there is much more reward in doing so.
Rasullullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) said:
“Umm Humayd, the wife of Abu Humayd, narrates that she went to Nabi (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam) and said, “O Rusulullah, I wish to perform salat with you.” Rasulullah (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied, “I know well that you wish to perform salat with me. However, the salat you perform in your room is better than perform it in your flat, and the salat performed in your flat is better than it performed in the building, and the salat perform in the building is better than it performed in the local masjid, and the salat performed in the local masjid is better than it performed in my masjid. The narrator says that she ordered that a prayer area be build for her in the farthest and darkest corner of the house and she performed her salat there until she met her Lord.” (Musnad Ahmad, Hadeeth # 29549, Saheeh Ibn Khuzaimah, Hadeeth # 1594, Saheeh Ibn Hibban, Hadeeth # 2217, Musannaf Ibn Ani Shaybah, Hadeeth # 7693)
