Title: 1. If you have a wet dream and you notice the stains on your underwear or sheets in the morning is it necessary to wash your sheets? 2. I sometimes wash clothes with my hands rather than in a washing machine. Are the splashes from washing these clothing impure?

Question

Assalaamualikum

1. If you have a wet dream and you notice the stains on your underwear in the morning but it is not a lot and you can't see any visible impurity on your pants and bed sheets, is it necessary to wash your sheets? If your sheets do have an impurity that has dried and you do not wash your sheets, if you sleep in those sheets are you required to make a ghusl afterwards?

2. I sometimes wash clothes with my hands rather than in a washing machine, the tap i use is very high up and the water comes out very fast. while im washing my clothes the water splashes off the clothes and on to my body/clothes and on the floor. Is this water impure? Do i need to change my clothes and wash the places where the water splashed? does the mop or cloth i use to wipe the water that splashed everywhere impure and needs to be cleaned?

Answer

Assalāmu `alaikum Warahmatullāhi Wabrakatuh,

1.       

a.      We understand from your question that you are certain that the stains on your garment is mani. If that is correct then rubbing and scraping off the dried mani  will be sufficient. [i][ii]

b.     If the mani dried on your sheets and you did not wash them, then merely sleeping on those sheets will not require you to do ghusl. [iii]

2.       

a.      We understand that the clothes you are washing are not merely dirty rather impure with the same mani. If that is the case, then the splashes of water will be impure.[iv] However, the clothes will only become impure if these splashes are equivalent to the hollow of one’s palm.[v]

As an alternative to avoid any confusion we suggest that a pair of clothing should be kept aside to be worn while washing.
You may also wash the impure part of the clothing first, making sure that the splashes do not dirty your clothing and thereafter wash the whole clothing. The impurity will have to be cleaned three time squeezing the water out with every wash.[vi]

b.     As for the impure water that splashes onto the floor.

i.      If the floor is tiled as is common in our times then it can be wiped clean with a mop, and the mop can thereafter be cleaned. [vii][viii][ix]

ii.      If the floor is earthen floor or surface which absorbs water and cannot be cleaned, then you may let the area dry until no effect remains. It will become pure. [x]
