Title

Husband wants me to breastfeed my child infront of inlaws

Question

I know that breastfeeding in front of mahram is permissible, however due to haya'  i prefer not to do so and if i have to i cover as much as possible so nothing is revealed. however when i am at my inlaw house my husband does not permit me to breastfeed in private (he think i will be depriving his parents of their grandchild) and i really dont like to breastfeed infront of my father inlaw. i have explained this to my husband and he says its up to me but he is not happy with me. so when i breastfeed i cover as much as i can. however my fatherinlaw plays with my daughter while she is breastfeeding so it is really uncomfortable for me. Am i displeasing Allah by going to another room?

Also is a baby's vomit that has not ate solid only some honey najis?how does it have to be cleaned?

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

1. It is natural for you to have hayā' and not want to expose yourself in front of your father-in-law.  It is not appropriate for your husband to require you to breastfeed in front of your father-in-law or to become upset due to your hayā'.  Consider the following hadīth by Imām Bukhārī:

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم passed by an Ansārī man who has admonishing his brother regarding [having too much] modesty.  The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "Leave him.  Verily, modesty is [a part of] īmān.

Breastfeeding only takes a few minutes and by you doing it in private, it cannot be considered as depriving your in-laws of their grandchild.  Eventually, your husband and in-laws will realize that you are not depriving them of their grandchild by just breastfeeding in private.

Taking into consideration the fitnā prevalent nowadays as evident per the queries we receive, we highly discourage you to expose yourself in front of your father-in-law.

2. A baby's vomit is najis (impure), even if he/she has not eaten any solid foods yet.  The vomit should be cleaned by washing it with water three times.  If the vomit gets on the clothes, then the water should be squeezed out from the clothes after each wash.
