In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

It is not permissible for a woman to enter the masjid in the state of menses. It is against the sanctity of the house of Allah to enter it in the state of impurity.

The least amount of days of purity a woman can experience is 15 days. The blood which you saw for the 5 days in between is not hayd but it is Istihada. Therefore, these days will be considered as days of purity and salat will be compulsory upon you. You may also recite the Qur’an and visit the masjid after cleaning the impurity from you.

It would be ideal if the women remain at home and perform their salat therein. The reward for her prayer performed at home holds more reward then her attending the masjid congregation. It is narrated in a Hadith:

Umm Humayd, the wife of Abu Humayd, narrates that she went to Nabi (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam) and said, “O Rusulullah, I wish to perform salat with you.”  Rasulullah (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied, “I am aware that you wish to perform salat with me.  However, the salat you perform in your room is better than your salat performed it in your flat, and the salat performed in your flat is better than it performed in the building, and the salat performed in the building is better than it performed in the local masjid, and the salat performed in the local masjid is better than it performed in my masjid.” The narrator says, “She ordered for a prayer area to be build for her in the farthest and darkest corner of the house and she performed her salat there until she met her Lord.” (Musnad Ahmad)

The Fuqaha have ruled that in view of the fitna of times, a woman should not attend the masjid for salat. However, we are aware that many in communities in different parts of the world the women attend the masjid prayers and participate in other Islamic programs. For such situations, some guidelines must be adhered to.

  • There should be a separate entrance for men and women.
  • The ladies’ prayer area should be separate from the men’s prayer area.
  • Precaution should be taken that no form of intermingling or any type of communication takes place between the men and women.
  • Modesty is maintained and one should refrain from wearing immodesty clothing.
