If we go to the mosque while the imam is just beginning finishing the Second Rakath of the Magrib prayers, how do we complete the rest of the prayers by ourselves? After joining the worshippers, when they finish the prayers, should we read the two ah-thahiyyaths (first aththahiyyath and final ah-thahiyyath) during the completion.

May Allah Guide you and Bless you.

Before proceeding with the answer, hereunder are some Ahadith on the importance and virtues of performing salah in jama’ah, the virtues of the first row and the virtues of performing Salah with Takbeer - e - Tahreemah.

Abdulah Ibn Masood رضى الله عنه   said:

“He who it pleases to meet Allah Ta’ala tomorrow (on the day of judgement) as a Muslim, then he should safeguard his Salah where it is called from (i.e. in the Masjid). For verily Allah Ta’ala has prescribed for you Nabi( صلى الله عليه و سلم) Sunan Al Huda (Those actions which are of guidance). And verily Salah is from amongst Sunan Al Huda. If you have to perform Salah at home like this one you will be leaving the Sunnah practice of your Nabi (صلى الله عليه و سلم) and if you leave the Sunnah practice of your Nabi (صلى الله عليه و سلم), you will go astray. None makes a complete wudu and comes to the Masjid, then he does not take a step but Allah Ta’ala in lieu of that raises his status, and forgive his sin. I saw a time when none should stay away from jama’ah except an open hypocrite. (If one was ill) he use to be brought by two people until he was made to stand in the saff (row). (Sahih Muslim 1486)

Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم mentioned that the best Saff (row) for males is the first row.

“He who performs prayer for forty days in Jama’ah (congregation) from the first Takbeer, for him there are two guaranties of freedom. Freedom from hell and freedom from hypocrisy”.

If a person misses two rak’ats of the Maghrib prayer and he stands to complete the missed rak’ats, he should recite Surah Fatiha and a Surah in both the rakats. One may sit in tashahud after the first rakat and then stand up for the second rakat. Or one may stand up after the first missed rakat without sitting in tashahud. Both ways are valid.

(Al-Bahrur Raiq 1/379 Rasheedia)
