Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatoh

The method of performing Salat Istighfaar is similar to performing any other nafl salaah, except that one will make intention of Istigjfaar before commencing the salaah.

Hazrat Ali (RA) has reported that Nabi ( صلى الله عليه و سلم ) said, “There is no person who commits a sin, thereafter stands up, makes wuzu, performs salaah and seeks forgiveness from Allah except that Allah Taala forgives him. (Tirmizhi, vol 1, pg 92)
