Question

A brother told me that we must recite the last three Surah of the Quran: Ikhlas,Falaq, Nas in the 3th rakat of Witr, Does this has a origin?

Also this brother told me that after the Takbir for qunut in the 3th rakat of Witr we must not fold hands but raise them like in duaa and leave them them like that for the duration of the qunut dua. He told me that this was related from Abu Hanifa by his student Abu Yusuf (recorded in Haskafi,Ibn Abidin) Is this true?

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatoh

One has the option of reciting which ever surah one wishes to in the third rakah of Witr.  To state that a certain surah must be recited is not true.  It is Sunnah to recite al-A’laa in the first rakah, al-Kafiroon in the second rakah, and al-Ikhlaas in the third rakah.  Imam Tirmidhi narrates in his Sunnan:

Ibn Abbas (Radhiyallahu Anhu) narrates that Nabi (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam) used to recite in Witr ‘Sabihisma Rabika al-Ala’, Qul Ya ayuha al-Kafiroon, and ‘Qul Hu Allahu Ahad’ in separate rakat.

However, it is disliked to fix these surahs on a daily basis for Witr and not to recite other surahs besides these, as people will start considering it to be Wajib.  It should be done occasionally without fixing it.

The narration of Abu Yusuf stating that one must raise the hands in Qunoot as if making dua is not the accepted view in the Hanafi Fiqh.  The accepted view is to keep the hands folded as they were before the Qunoot.
